Sponsored cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End

At the beginning of September, Phil Webb, who works on the farm, is undertaking a sponsored cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End — a distance of approximately 1000 miles. He will be part of a 3 man team and the ride will be unsupported — i.e. with no following vehicle, map reading as they go along. Their aim is to cover between 80—100 miles a day without any rest days. They will also carry all their kit, including tents and sleeping bags, to camp along the way.

Phil is looking for as many sponsors as possible to raise money to buy a projector for the theatre here at Stallcombe House. This will enable our residents to enjoy film nights in an improved atmosphere. Please support Phil in this momentous challenge!

New Residential Bungalow at Stallcombe - Jul 2010

Following a visit by a highly impressed Care Quality Commission Inspector, Willows is now open. We are pleased to say that the first 3 residents are now in the process of settling in to their new home, supported by 17 full and part-time staff. The residents are beginning to access the varied opportunities at Stallcombe: the weavery, horse management, farm, egg round, garden, music, and enjoying many walks around our beautiful grounds. They are also accessing the wider community, walking on the common, joining the gym in Exmouth and going shopping with their key support workers.

For further details, please telephone Heather Camus, Team Leader on 01395 232355.

HRH The Duke of Gloucester visits Stallcombe - Apr 2009

On Tuesday 7th April we were privileged to host a visit from HRH The Duke of Gloucester. The Duke was given a guided tour of Stallcombe and had the chance to meet and chat to residents and staff. The whole visit was very relaxed and HRH proved to be very knowledgeable in many areas and took a great interest in the Weavery and the music group. When it came to Hero’s Corner the Duke proved to be fluent in Alpaca speak and cracked a good chicken joke!

During the visit HRH was presented by James with a felt picture of a mulberry tree made in the Art and Craft Therapy Centre. Asisisted by Ritchie, he also planted a Bramley Apple Tree in the orchard during a small ceremony hosted by Celia Steven, the great grand daughter of Henry Merryweather who first cultivated Bramley apple trees commercially in Nottinghamshire.

The Duke then went on to unveil a commemorative plaque and sign the visitors’ book.

In his closing speech the Duke expressed his admiration for Stallcombe, its residents and staff and recognised the excellent work it has been doing for over many years.

Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the day and thought it a great milestone in the history of Stallcombe.

Wassailing - Jan 2009

Residents and staff donned garlands and headwear and gathered together in the orchard for the annual Wassailing ceremony, to insure a fine crop of apples for the forthcoming summer. The trees were blessed with toast and cider, a hearty chant was loudly sung, accompanied by the banging of drums and other instruments, and afterwards all cold participants assembled in the Roundhouse for homemade apple flan and fruit punch.

The great escape! - Dec 2008

Much excitement was had in the yard this cold morning, when the goats and pigs made a bid for freedom. Here we have a picture of Phil and Jenny demonstrating their goat wrestling techniques... (No animals were harmed in this production.)
